Episode 6 - TECH RUN-A-MOK

TENT CITY - EPISODE 6 - TECH RUN-A-MOK

FADE IN:

EXT: SENATE OFFICE BUILDING in DC - DAY

INT: OFFICE OF SENATOR BUTSUKER – DAY

Senator BUTSUKER and Senator SELURSOL, both close allies of the President are meeting with CHAD SMITH, PRISHA CHOPRA and STEVE GEEKOS, the top three Silicon Valley tech giant CEOs in regard to the Senators co-sponsored Chip Tracking Bill to implant micro ID chips into the wrists of the remaining 25 million Tent City citizens.

BUTSUKER
Gentlemen, we have done all we can. The Chip bill would make it through the Senate but the new House of Representatives won’t even bring it to the floor for a debate!

SELURSOL
It’s true – this Bill is a dead duck. We tried guys but we lost the House last election, and this is the new reality.

CHAD
The reality is that we collectively have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to your campaigns since your party retook the Senate 8 years ago. That does not even include the sweat equity of having our workers do all in their power to sway the elections in your direction via our social media platforms. Therefore, we expect you to follow through on your end of the bargain.

STEVE
Yeah – need I remind you that we can easily tip the scales of mass media toward the other parties this presidential election cycle unless…

PRISHA
Unless you re-introduce another version of this bill, albeit with a few revisions to appease the masses - just get the bill passed and signed by the president who also owes us big time!

BUTSUKER
That’s simply not possible – it’s an either/or Bill – either we implant chips in 25 million Americans, or we don’t – there is no compromise. We packaged and presented the Bill with the selling points we all agreed to – eliminate cheating on receiving rations and supplies, high efficiency ID chip technology to reduce waste and the time waiting in lines and using the chips to help relocate Tent City residents. But the American people are not buying it, and the available government research data does not back up our claims!

SELURSOL
Yes, Senator Butsuker is right – the key fob IDs are working fine, with virtually no reports of cheating and studies have revealed that a microchip implant would only reduce time waiting in lines by a few seconds – that the Tent City residents have said they will gladly deal with rather than have a chip put in their arms.

BUTSUKER
And as far as your corporate opaque reasons having to do with your main business interest in this invasive Chip Bill, namely increasing your advertising revenues by tracking 25 million consumers 24/7. Yet the US government does this already through the keyfob tech that have GPS and radio frequency tagging to track the Tent City residents’ movements. This information is kept under lock and key with the highest-level quantum encryption by a bi-partisan commission to ensure citizens’ privacy will be protected until the temporary disaster laws are rescinded. This tracking was only allowed based on the Patriot Act 3, which will surely be revised in the near future as the American public is growing impatient with all the post flood disaster legislation that curbs their basic rights and freedoms.

SELURSOL
Furthermore, the House is full of new Progressives and Green Party members again – and they are looking to shake things up with the majority of citizens behind them. Senator Butsuker and I will be lucky if get reelected in this current atmosphere. Let’s face it – you guys and Ms Chopra only supported us and the president with donations to our campaigns to eventually get this Chip Bill through so you could make back some of the advertising fortune you lost decades ago when the Progressives passed the Data as Labor Act, and you lost millions of users, were forced to erase massive amounts of people’s personal data and had to compete with new players switching to mostly monthly subscription plans for your vastly smaller customer base. Not nearly as lucrative as the 24/7 advertising dollars you reaped for decades in exchange for billions of peoples’ free private data.

STEVE
Senator – what you say may contain some truth, but with all due respect you are not telling us anything we do not already know about the Chip Bill and its merits or lack thereof. We initially offered to take charge of the government keyfob technology for no charge but a few Democratic Socialists and Progressive holdouts in the Senate and House prevented it from happening. Needless to say, we could not support their grass roots campaigns by their own choice and thus the disagreeable outcome. You and Senator Butsuker’s job was to convince the congress and American people that our three-way corporate chip endeavor was the best path forward and you have failed. And FYI - we survived the Data as Labor Act because our companies’ acquisition portfolio was big and diverse – even having been accused of being monopolies by a Senate Judiciary Committee years ago. So, we simply moved our different companies’ headquarters to other, more hospitable countries with much lower tax rates as well. Therefore, not having to break up our huge syndicates and lower tax rates – a win-win for us!

BUTSUKER
Yes that was very patriotic of you all (sarcasm).

PRISHA
Need we remind you Senators that the President and some of his top advisors supported the Chip Bill because it would have served as a national security tool to monitor the Tent City residents for weapons, something that your gov keyfobs cannot do - in case of an armed uprising?

SELURSOL
And as you know there are no guns allowed in the Tent Cities and all residents have to go through metal detectors upon entering the facilities and there has been no uprisings whatsoever in the year plus these Tent Cities have existed, which is another strong reason why this argument holds no water. The only violent clashes have been with outside local militias and the private police forces.

CHAD
What about all the long-term plans this President’s administration endorsed, which includes you and Senator Butsuker - such as tracking the ignorant social behaviors of the poor receiving welfare? This surely is an easy sell to the other 50% of hard-working, healthy Americans paying high taxes carrying these sick deadbeats and drug addicts on their backs? Ideas like the drug testing, smoking, soda and junk food penalty deductions saving the taxpayers billions, or catching disability cheaters? Billions in tax revenues that could be applied toward education and infrastructure for all citizens?

BUTSUKER
Yes, yes, yes. We see the merit in these ideas but most of the American public shares one value more than any other – their love of their rights and freedoms. All the polls show a majority claims this Chip Bill is an intrusion of their 4th amendment right to privacy and unreasonable search and seizures etc. And the ratio of poor welfare recipients in these Tent Cities is the same as the general public – around 20% - with another 30% lower middle class receiving some type of extra government assistance in addition to UBI and Social Security and the remaining 50% are the middle middle class that had little or no savings to deal with disasters like the floods.

PRISHA
Yes – we know all the facts and figures Senator – we are just very disappointed that your administration could not get this Bill through before the new congress took over.

SELURSOL
You all know that would have been impossible on top of all the other extreme safety measures the President pushed through congress after the great floods that the general public is up in arms about – the curfew, limits on people’s movements and suspending Habeas Corpus were as much messing with basic freedoms as the American people could take – to add on your Chip implant – that you originally had the audacity to suggest being done to all 430 million US citizens - would have been the straw that broke the camel’s back and we would surely have had an armed uprising on our hands!

STEVE
Well nonetheless – you did not come through for us si-ne qua non, thus this chapter of quid pro quo election cycle monies and help on our media platforms is over. Never mind potential future cushy high paying lobbying jobs.

BUTSUKER
We don’t use those incriminating Latin terms around here – because it’s illegal gentlemen! As for future lobbying job prospects – let’s not be hasty! Surely there are other Bills that we could push through in the next few months that are more realistic and bi-partisan and still valuable to your companies’ bottom lines? You once mentioned a merger between all three of your companies into one massive multi-national corporation – maybe we could make that happen through the FTC and DOJ channels along with the president working together – while we still can?

CHAD
That train has come and left the station Senators.

STEVE
Not necessarily Chad – we did recently discuss an all-out takeover of the multi-trillion dollar Virtual Reality market – because content is now King again and I own most of the most popular content studios, and Chad – you make the best-selling VR headset hardware and Prisha’s company still has the patent for 7 years on the best 3D optic software technology.

PRISHA
That’s true Steve – we already own a significant portion of the market between the three of us and seeing as all the pieces are in place to dominate this vital commercial space – it would make sense to make this happen to get back some of the fortune we invested in elections and wasted on the Chip plan over the last decade.

CHAD
All right, all right – but we will need some more time to discuss this privately and get back to you Senators about our decision. There is also the issue of whether we will support you in the next elections – which does not look good for your party as it stands right now. It would obviously be contingent on this merger deal going through if and when we decide to move forward with it.

SELURSOL
Well, you all better decide ASAP because there’s only a few months left before the election and that’s a minimum amount of time to try to get through such a huge and controversial and some would even say illegal merger through the FTC and DOJ.

STEVE
Yes – we will get back to you in few days with our decision. Otherwise it’s adios amigos!

BUTSUKER
Very well then gentlemen, concluding - we are all agreed that the Chip implant Bill is dead in the water and could not be passed at this time. So, we will hopefully move forward on this merger proposal to keep America on top in the global economy and keep our mutually beneficial relationship with some of our most generous campaign donors intact to the benefit of all parties involved.

Episode 7 - A Day in the Life of US Tent City Family 2068

TENT CITY

Episode 7 – A Day in the Life of US Tent City Family 2068

FADE IN:

HENRY JACKSON, his wife MARY and their two children WILL and his older sister ANGEL are doing their nightly routines within their tent, as residents in the NEW NEW YORK TENT CITY.

MARY
All right you two – you’re already past the limit for your VR time. Go brush your teeth and get ready for bed!

WILL
Just a few more minutes Mom – please! I am about to set a new personal high score on my game!

MARY
No! Don’t make me ask again William!

WILL
Ahh Mannnn! (takes off VR headset)

ANGEL
Don’t know why you’re so upset – you don’t even rank in the top 20 percentile!

WILL
Oh shut up – you’re just jealous because you stink at games!

ANGEL
That’s because I can’t be bothered with them. All the shooting, killing and fake martial arts model is so old and boring!

WILL
How can you say that! At least we move around a little compared to the kids who just sat around for decades before VR.

ANGEL
A little is right – the avatars do all the fighting and real action and you are just the eyes and ears pushing some hand held buttons to decide what direction to go in.

WILL
You think you’re so smart engaging with people far away who are trying to save the world – well guess what – it’s too late! We live in a tent and probably will be stuck here forever!

HENRY
That’s enough young man! You too Angel – no need tease each other about our VR habits! To each his or her own! We all like to do different things on the VR. Your Mother and I set up the viewing parameters and so whatever you do is safe as far as we are concerned.

MARY
Your father is right and even though I don’t like the violent shooting games I have allowed for the less graphic ones – and as far as being stuck here forever – it’s simply not true. We will be relocated – it’s a matter of when – not if! So no more negative projections from you about our relocation – understand?

WILL
Yes Mom.

MARY
Good – now both of you – go get ready for bed – and go to the bathroom. I’ll be in in a few minutes to tuck you in.

ANGEL
I’ll wait until the last minute for the girls bathroom to avoid the nighttime rush – too crowed with gossips for me to deal with.

KIDS GO TO OTHER ROOM WITHIN TENT

HENRY
That girl is too mature for her young age. She is being robbed of her childhood because of this post disaster Tent City life.

MARY
Yes – they both are unfortunately but we must stay positive and provide the best…

HENRY
Environment possible – yes dear – we are agreed on that nonetheless…

MARY
Nonetheless nothing! (in a hushed intense voice) I can’t hear the tangent anymore Henry! After more than a year - I know it by heart now – okay? Let’s not go there anymore because complaining about our situation is not going to do anything but stress everyone out as we have agreed not to several times now!

HENRY
Yes, yes – you’re right. Anyway, I registered for the march today.

MARY
What? I thought we were going to talk about that more before you signed the pledge?

HENRY
Listen Mary – if you do not want to go to what will be the biggest march for our basic rights in this country’s history – fine – but please don’t dictate my choice to participate.

MARY
We are husband and wife and we have two beautiful children that cannot afford to lose their father to jail or worse!

HENRY
Please stop with the hysterics! This march is all about peace and civil disobedience if necessary. The pledge states that anyone who breaks from the peaceful resistance methods should not sign up or participate!

MARY
Oh sure – easy for Professor Palenti to preach disobedience who has no children or a wife to worry about! His only responsibility is to himself and his ideals!

HENRY
I know you don’t mean that Mary. We both respect and are glad Palenti is doing what he has been doing – to fight for 27 million homeless citizens’ rights, speed up relocation and organize possibly 2-3 million people from all over the country for this march on DC! It’s the only leverage power wise that we, the tent city people have had so far since we were relocated!

MARY
That may be all well and true but you know there will be racist militias showing up to disrupt the march, never mind what this conservative, backwards president and his evil administration have up their sleeves! They know if this march is successful it will sway the elections against them, so they are definitely going to try to sabotage it and many people will get hurt, arrested and probably even killed!

HENRY
Okay – okay – don’t get your blood pressure up! Honey – you know that our people have had to fight for our rights one way or another since we were forced here in chains 500 years ago! Palenti’s peaceful resistance method worked for Martin Luther King and black civil rights in the 1960s and his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ vision has stood the test of time and was starting to take hold in the country’s consciousness before the floods. All I’m saying is that sometimes we must stand up for our rights. This march is really important right now with so much on the line for the future of our country and especially our own family! If I don’t go – I will regret it! You are the one who always says actions speak louder than words – so this is a rare opportunity for we the people to unite and check the powers that be – that do not have our long term middle class interests at heart and even wish to do us harm!

MARY
Yes, actions do speak louder than words, but I only have one husband and more importantly the kids only have one father!

HENRY
You’re being overly dramatic – there has not been a killing during a protest since Charlottesville way back in the early 2000s – and that was just one unfortunate white girl that was driven over by a stupid white supremacist. The cops have not killed a protester since the Ohio Kent State college student in 1970 during an anti-Vietnam war protest – and she was white too!

MARY
You are conveniently not mentioning all the killings of black college students in the South and members of the Black Panthers all over the country during the same 1960s and 1970s, as well of the thousands of innocent black men and women that were shot dead by police on a regular basis up until the smart phone came along and cops had to wear body cameras, and yet it still continued for decades – all though to a much lesser extent. So yeah – I am worried for good reason!

HENRY
That all is true but this is a protest with potentially millions of other people from all different backgrounds. If the cops start to maim, or worse kill anyone at this march that will be seen all over the world – there will be hell to pay for the president and his administration and it will definitely hurt any chance of his reelection. The odds are in favor of nothing bad happening.

MARY
Famous last words. Listen Henry Jackson – you do what you think is best and I will hold down the fort here while you stand up for what’s right in DC. I know this march is important and the only way things change in this country is when the grass roots movements get out in the streets and demand change – so you do us proud husband of mine and father of my children! (tears trickle down face)

HENRY
Now now dear! (hugs her close) There’s nothing to worry about and I will represent our New New York Tent City Jackson family! I want the kids to understand about this peaceful freedom fighting and help make a cool sign for me to carry in the march.

MARY
Yes – that’s a good idea. Nothing worthwhile in life is ever easy – especially for the marginalized peoples of the world. It’s time to take back America from these rich, racist thugs!

HENRY
Right on!

ANGEL COMES OUT OF ROOM TO GO OUTSIDE TO BATHROOM

ANGEL
Mom – Dad – can I start working on the sign tomorrow?

MARY
Angel – were you listening to our conversation?

ANGEL
Mom – the walls are made of fabric – yes I heard your conversation as I do most of the time, but tonight you were louder than usual. We need to fight for our rights and to be relocated sooner than later or else we will be stuck here forever! We need Senator Jones to be the next president!

HENRY
You are too smart for your own good young lady. Of course you can start working on the sign tomorrow! But think about it a little, come up with a few good ideas with your brother and I will pick the one I think best. We still have time – so there is no rush. You make me very proud - Give me a hug child!

THEY HUG AND MARY JOINS IN AND THEN WILL POPS OUT OF ROOM AND JOINS HUG CIRCLE

WILL
I want to help too!

MARY
Come here you!

Episode 8 - Inside the Beltway

Episode 8 – Inside the Beltway

FADE IN: NIGHT - A Popular Bar in DC for Gov officials

TREVOR is snorting a line of coke off the sink in the bar’s bathroom before he retakes his drinking seat at the Bar and hits on whatever woman happens to order a drink. KEVIN, having a drink with a COLLEAGUE, sitting at a corner table across the room had spotted him earlier and was hoping to avoid him when he was spotted by TREVOR doing a female scan of the room.

TREVOR approaches table where KEVIN & COLLEAGUE are finishing up a discussion…

TREVOR
Well if it isn’t the Data boy wonder! Long time no see! What’s new in the oval office?

KEVIN
Hey Trevor – yeah it’s been a while. You know I can’t talk about that stuff. Anyway, my colleague and I were just leaving.

TREVOR
What? Have I got the cooties or something? Come on man – stick around for minute so we can catch up. We haven’t spoken since I took over your old job working for White.

Looks at COLLEAGUE for reason to go with him but has none

COLLEAGUE
That’s cool Kevin – We were done anyway. I’ll get on that project first thing in the morning - Nice to meet you Trevor. Good night.

COLLEAGUE departs and TREVOR takes his seat at the table

TREVOR
So - why the cold reception Kevin? Not holding any grudges, are we?

KEVIN
No – why would I – just tired from working all day.

TREVOR
I realize we were never that close in college, you being a couple years ahead of me but we had a few good times at the Delta-Phi sorority parties! Remember that time when Tad put the ecstasy powder in the punch? Everyone got laid that night!

KEVIN
Yeah – whether they liked it or not.

TREVOR
What’s that?

KEVIN
Nothing – you come here often?

TREVOR
Often enough – usually when I’m lonely and horny – try to get some action. But it’s been a little dry lately – what about you?

KEVIN
Once in a while to let off a little steam and usually with a colleague or two working out the next day’s agenda.

TREVOR
Must be pretty cool working for the president with all the crazy shit going on in the world right now.

KEVIN
I don’t about cool but definitely not boring. So you’re still working for Mr. White?

TREVOR
Yes, yes! Old man has taken quite a liking to me – because I execute Kevin! He’s showing me the ropes and I am paying close attention to a master.

Another round of drinks arrives ordered previously by Trevor

KEVIN
Oh thanks – but I really shouldn’t – need to get up early tomorrow…

TREVOR
So do we all Kevin! Come on man – it’s just another beer – I’m drinking the hard stuff here! Let’s catch up a little – I can tell you what I’ve been working on – not as top secret as what you’re allowed to talk about – even though I have signed non discloser agreements – but we’re all on the same side – right Kevin?

KEVIN
Same side? What do you mean by that?

TREVOR
Come on Kevin – don’t play dumb – you know what I mean! I may not be in on the actual meetings with Mr. White and the president, but I get a decent break down from the old man. This neo-Socialist CRD movement and the march on DC is a threat to our agenda man!

KEVIN
What agenda would that be?

TREVOR
Oh – okay – you’re going to be like that! Whatever dude! Our people have to stick together – there’s a battle for our country going on pal!

KEVIN
The only battle I’m concerned with is trying to get the president reelected in a few months.

TREVOR
Exactly – that’s what I’m talking about! I have been working behind the scenes to ensure that and the demise of the CRD movement.

KEVIN
Yes – I see you have become quite the disinformation propaganda machine against Joe Palenti.

TREVOR
That’s right my friend. I have a young social media crew under my wing spreading semi-truths about Palenti – who I consider a commie enemy of the state!

KEVIN
Semi-truths? Gimme a break! Straight up lies are more like it. Mr. Palenti is a decorated war vet and an Ivy league educated History professor.

Trevor raises his hand for another round of drinks.

TREVOR
Wow! Whose side are you on man? Palenti and other radicals like him are a dangerous threat to the hierarchy established by our founding fathers. I always wondered where your allegiances lie being a science geek from the middle class. But you are a WASP and should be proud of your heritage and willing to fight to keep control of our country. We only have a tenuous grip that could easily slip back to the riff raff who have ruined our country over the last few decades!

KEVIN
I am on the side of the Constitution Trevor. My Dad served over seas’ as did my uncles. I worked my ass off to receive all my scholarships to get through the ridiculously expensive and pretentious Ivy League schools. As far as the riff raff – we are a melting pot country of immigrants and our diversity has always been an asset as far as innovation, industry and culture. If anything, the riff raff are historically the creative types that give us cultural soft power around the world. The people of the world like our movies, music and VR games, bombs not so much. And FYI – I am part Irish and possibly a little Native American – neither of whom were treated well historically by the WASPs by any stretch of the imagination.

TREVOR
Oh my God! You sound like one of them! You’re mostly white – right? Are you even a Republican? Please don’t tell me you’re an Independent, Progressive or Democratic Socialist!

KEVIN
If you must know – yes I am a conservative Independent.

TREVOR
Isn’t that convenient! Sounds like a switch hitter to me – the kind that spread diseases! I always knew you were not really one of us – refused to be initiated into our fraternity – just came to the parties occasionally – a real rebel huh?

KEVIN
Yes – I was never big on the hazing rituals – seemed foolish and immature. While you guys partied all the time, I had to work extra hard to keep my GPA at 4.0 to keep the scholarships going. Unlike you and your frat buddies – I did not win the inheritance lottery.

TREVOR
Yeah – yeah – Mr. Cum Laude! A real know it all - huh? Well there you are wrong Mr. Smarty Pants! My family lost most of our fortune during the Green Revolution era – the switch over to new energies killed our portfolio. Granted – I still have a decent nest egg that I plan to use to launch my own ship soon.

KEVIN
Got big ambitions – what a surprise! The sky’s the limit – right?

TREVOR
You sound like a closet commie Kevin! Big ambitions built this country my friend.

Trevor orders another drink for himself, as Kevin indicates none for him to the waiter with a wave of his hand.

KEVIN
Ambition is all well and fine – the American Dream’s appeal is to work hard for a decent life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but greedy, blind ambitions have caused many of the major problems we are facing today in the late 21st century.

TREVOR
I read this anti-free market, anti-American crap on the Internet all the time from naïve people who don’t have any money so it’s easy for them to trash the system. Whose fault is it they are poor? Their own! Why do they all want to reach into our pockets and take our hard-earned money? People have to take responsibility for themselves! Am I wrong Kevin?

KEVIN
No – I agree with you about taking responsibility – but these issues are complex, and I really don’t have the energy or time to debate them with you right now. I…

TREVOR
All right - hold up a minute – I just got this drink and you still have a half a beer left – let’s change the

TREVOR (CON’T)
subject to something you may be more interested in – how we plan to shut down the big march.

KEVIN
The president told Mr. White he did not want anything to do with anything that may cause a major ruckus a month before the election in November – so I think it best you keep that info to yourself – I…

TREVOR
Don’t play coy with me Kevin – you’re dying to hear what your old boss Mr. White has in mind!

KEVIN
No - really, I’m not.

Trevor is now clearly drunk and slurring his words.

TREVOR
He’s going to do the old planting of thugs’ scheme at the beginning of the DC march to create violence and chaos so Homeland Security moves in and shuts it down before it even starts! Thus, killing the CRD movement in its tracks and hurting Senator Jones chances of winning the election. I even overheard something about taking out Palenti but I was listening through a door – so…

KEVIN
I knew there was a reason I did not want to talk to you. I really must be going now – take care Trevor.

TREVOR
Wait a minnnuutte – I was just about to tell youuuuu about how I tagged Amelia a few chimes! I know you always had a crush on her but were too shyyyy to bust a move!

KEVIN
Wha – what? You and Amelia? I don’t believe it!

TREVOR
Oh yeah – it was awesome! You can ask her if you don’t believe me. Unfortunately, she and the old man had a fight and now she lives in exile in some dumpy pad in the DC suburbs working at a nonprofit. God knows why – she just passed the bar exam! She’s kind of like you with all her self-righteous moralizing. Sadly, she’ll have nothing to do with me – not her type I guess. Tooo ambitious! Ha ha! Hey Kevin – hold up… Don’t be so sensitive! I haven’t told you about my own big plans yet!

Kevin storms out of the bar disgusted by everything he has heard from Trevor.

Episode 9 - Working For a Living

Episode 9 – Working For a Living

FADE IN: NIGHT = APARTMENT BUILDING IN DC SUBURBS

AMELIA is having a conversation with her new roommate JANET.

AMELIA
Again – I really appreciate you letting me move in two weeks early. I hope it’s not a major inconvenience.

JANET
Not at all! I just assumed most potential roommates would move in at the beginning of the month but no worries – it seems like you were in a tight spot.

AMELIA
Yeah – sort of – needed to escape a dysfunctional family situation. You have to pardon me for not going into details. Also, I had been looking for a couple of weeks already and finally I met someone normal – well you know what I mean – right?

JANET
Oh yes – normal is good for a roommate! I went through a few hellish living situations myself before I finally saved up enough money to rent this apartment. Between the realtor’s fees, first, last and security, the work and credit checks etc. – you need to be a rich yuppie nowadays!

AMELIA
Yes, well I had a good feeling about you and this place from the ad and our meeting the first time confirmed it. Just in the knick of time because my college apartment situation was already 2 weeks past the vacancy time limit and I only got away with it because – well anyway – glad to be here!

JANET
Your excellent references all checked out and I couldn’t help but be impressed with your Harvard law school affiliation. We both have been so busy with our jobs that we haven’t really had time for a nice get to know each other conversation.

AMELIA
That’s true, but to be honest I’m kind of a private person when it comes to family stuff but am willing to open up about pretty much anything else.

JANET
I totally respect that and I too am sort of like that. We are still strangers after all and I wouldn’t take the liberty of probing about personal stuff. Anyway, as I may have already told you, I work at a non-profit that helps women in poor countries get micro loans. And you said you just started at a small law firm?

AMELIA
That’s right – I just recently passed the bar exam after finishing my degree and I’m starting as a humble, low-level lawyer at a small firm in DC.

JANET
Well – you got to start somewhere – right? I grew up in Connecticut and then got accepted to Berkeley in California. I thought I was going to major in Sociology but switched to Political Science after getting involved in some activism in the Bay area – this is of course before the flood events.

AMELIA
Yes – the floods have changed everything in our country – mostly for the millions of coastal peoples who now live in tent cities. I love the Bay area – had a boyfriend there – briefly. Loved the city and going for walks on the beach at Big Sur – those redwoods are amazing! So you must be pretty smart to have gotten into Berkeley.

JANET
Not as smart as you have to be to get into Harvard! So you know the Bay area. Yeah, I miss it and feel so bad for all my friends that have been wiped out by the floods. I am definitely going to the march. I have friends who live in the New Cali tent city and have stayed in touch. They told me how depressing it is to live there but they also said they have made some real friends and are hopeful that a new president will speed up the relocation process.

AMELIA
It’s really sad - I can’t imagine living there. I really did not have much choice about Harvard – sort of a family tradition but I really had a great experience.Do you really think Senator Jones can deliver on all her promises?

JANET
I do – I really do. I think her record speaks for itself. She has been very consistent in her progressive voting history and seems genuine in her passion to restore our basic rights, speed up the relocation process and finish up the Green Revolution toward 100% renewable energies.

AMELIA
Wow – you have her platform down - you sound like you work for her.

JANET
Full transparency – I do volunteer for Senator Jones’ committee to register voters. Something that most states did automatically until this administration made the new federal registration form a requirement for all voters. This election is too important to get stuck with this stupid president and all his cronies again – there’s too much at stake! Oh – are you a Republican? I did not mean to insult the president but…

AMELIA
Don’t sweat it – I have been a registered as a Republican for my first two elections but am going to change parties soon to become an Independent. I too am sick of this president and all his cronies.

JANET
Whew – because politics is like religion around the DC area – actually all over the country again. My parents are old school Democrat Centrists but after my activism while attending Berkeley, I joined the more left Progressive party because of their history of fighting for the majority working class and marginalized minorities to achieve the American Dream.

AMELIA
I can appreciate that. I see the Independent party as the modern centrists. I have a mixed bag of ideas on how our country should move forward and so… Let’s take a break from politics. I grew up in Colorado mostly. I love to boogie board, listen to old school soul music from the 1960s and 70s and am trying to be a vegan as of late.

JANET
I tried skiing a couple times but am not very athletic that way. I do some yoga nowadays and I am mostly vegetarian for years now – tried the vegan thing but love cheese too much! I just try to buy the brands that treat their animals with respect. Meat eating has actually gone up recently for the first time in decades since this new president got in office. It was at an all time low until he deregulated everything. As you may know, meat consumption was once one of the top three causes of Global Warming.

AMELIA
That’s part of the reason I am trying to be a vegan as well as health concerns. I see by the nice prints you have framed you like the modern art era –– I love Georgia O’Keefe as well.

JANET
Yes I do – maybe someday I will be able to afford a real one. They are nice to see everyday for inspiration. The O’Keefe one is calming but when I need some energy I look at the Kandinsky – awesome use of colors – so vibrant! I draw for a hobby – how about you?

AMELIA
Law school has sucked up my vibe for years but I would like to do some kind of creative endeavor – get my hands dirty. I was thinking about getting a sewing machine. I have a few basic design ideas for dresses or bags maybe.

JANET
That sounds great! I have jeans I would love to sew some patches on! That is if you are willing to share. I learned from my Mom when I was little.

AMELIA
Of course! Maybe you could teach me? You said you were going to the march – will you be going with your fellow supporters of Senator Jones?

JANET
Yes as a matter of fact. Would you like to join us?

AMELIA
Maybe – I too am fed up with the loss of our cherished freedoms and want to see the tent city residents relocated to real homes. So I will let you know soon – okay?

JANET
No pressure – it will be a great day but I imagine a little hectic based upon the latest estimates of over 2 million marchers from all over the country descending on DC! It will be the biggest protest ever - 10 times the last record set decades ago.

AMELIA
Yes – a little intimidating. I never protested anything in my life but this is important and will be historical! What do you think of this Mr. Palenti – the leader of the CRD movement?

JANET
OMG! I am in love with him – well you know what I mean. I mean the guy is so smart and gorgeous! He’s a strong ex-military war hero and well educated progressive – one of your fellow Ivy leaguers! I would marry him in second!

AMELIA
Wow - I guess you like him then. I just wonder if he has bitten off more than he can chew. I mean there have been no major protests in decades and with the angry armed militias around the country stirring up trouble – I wonder if his passive resistance technique is realistic.

JANET
Yes – we are all concerned about violence breaking out – not just from them but even homeland security looking to stop the march before it begins! My little volunteer contingency are actually going to get to meet him in person next week when he comes down to DC to train groups in civil disobedience techniques. He will also meet with Senator Jones and other committees in charge of organizing the march speakers and such. Would you want to come?

AMELIA
Wow – sounds cool but again – can I sleep on it and tell you in a day or so?

JANET
Yeah but I would need to know within a couple days so I can let my people know how many I plan to bring to the training session. I am soooo excited! This guy could be a future president!

AMELIA
Yes – you may be right. He is quite intelligent and easy on the eyes! You know what – I will go! I appreciate the invite! I am on a new independent trajectory in my life and these turbulent times call for action – no more armchair warrior for me!

JANET
Super! I am so happy we are on the same page about this march and how important it is to the future of our country. We will all sink or swim – together – literally!

AMELIA
That’s true Janet. I want to be on the right side of history and get to know my fellow Americans. As you may have figured out, I am from a privileged background and recently had an epiphany about how segregated I have been from the general population. It’s embarrassing really but I made a promise to myself to stretch my boundaries and get outside my comfort zone and really see what’s happening on the ground in our country and the world!

JANET
I wasn’t going to say anything but I gleaned that you must come from money based on your Harvard attendance, your expensive name brand clothing and luggage etc. but I appreciate that you are breaking out of your privileged circles to see how the other half – actually 90% of us live!

AMELIA
Well if you go by my bank account balance, I am officially middle class. You see I had a fall out with my father and have been cut off from my trust fund. It has not been easy but I am enjoying my new found freedom from having to kiss his ass to get that monthly stipend. Not to be rude or condescending but I don’t know how people do it! I have to watch every penny – I mean we rich folks are frugal too – it’s how we stay rich but this paycheck-to-paycheck reality is a real challenge to say the least!

JANET
Welcome to our world Amelia! I wish every rich person would do what you have done – not the breaking up of family part – but voluntarily, as a social experiment to see what it’s like for the majority of citizens who are all a couple of paychecks away from poverty! The UBI helped but is not enough to live on for one person never mind a family. Our family did great during the height of the Green New Deal – but many of those jobs dried up in the last decade and the robots have taken what ever other jobs exist. You can’t compete with a robot!

AMELIA
It has been a great and humbling learning experience so far. I only hope I can move up at my firm quickly to get a raise as soon as possible!

JANET
I hear you sister friend! I love my non-profit job and get to see the results of our great work helping people around the world but I barely make enough to survive. I originally was going to make your bedroom into a small study to write my book, but I have to put that on hold – at least until after this march and election cycle. We all have to prioritize our time and energy for our selves and the greater collective if we are all to prosper.

AMELIA
Write a book – wow – that’s ambitious! Sorry to take your study space! Fiction or non-fiction?

JANET
No worries – I will have less stress in my life worrying about paying the rent and will be able to treat myself to some much needed new clothes and maybe even save a few bucks now that you have moved in. It will be non-fiction. I have some ideas about better government policies based on my activism in college; my non-profit and volunteer work. I have a long-term dream of being a Senator myself one day. I figure I will put all my ideas down in a book, try to get published and then go from there.

AMELIA
That sounds great! I have become a spiritual person as of late and I believe that all things happen for a reason. I am glad we ended up together Janet.

JANET
Me too! I am so relieved that we get along! I thought and was hoping we would because I too met a few other potential roommates and the chemistry was not right. But I felt a kindred spirit in you and am happy to see my intuition was right!

AMELIA
Well I actually have some more things to unpack and so…

JANET
By all means! I am retiring for the night – Sweet dreams!

AMELIA
Good Night. When you get a minute, just text me the details of the resistance march training session next week. I am nervous and excited!

JANET
Me too! I’ll do it right now!
